Container Gardening Ideas

Today was the last day of the Northwest Flower & Garden Show. I remembered what the crowds were like last year so I decided to be an early bird and get the worm and I arrived at 9 a.m., right before the show opened. To my surprise, the crowds were sparse, even with the rain!
Container Gardens
The first exhibit I saw was the container gardens. As I am not a fan of slugs and the like, I am prone to container gardening, even with my vegetables. My favorite display was French Nouveau and Furney’s Nursery “Stunning Simplicity” (see photos) and I got some great ideas for my new wrought iron planters.
Marketplace
BYKO Show Products (booth #2357) had upside-down tomato planters. You grow them off the ground and they hang down. I found out I could grow cucumbers, peppers, etc. in this container. I’ve decided to try this method since something kept eating my cucumbers last year and it is easier to keep it free of diseases this way. Plus it makes an interesting conversation piece.
Seminars
I attended a seminar called “No Space? No Problem!” This was a step-by-step container gardening guide by Ellen Zachos, who is the author of Down and Dirty: 45 Fun and Funky Garden Projects. Her vibrant personality and interesting ideas made the time fly by with me wanting more. I have been inspired to try my hand at an herb container garden by my kitchen window.

While we all want the NWF&GS to be a huge popular sucess….it is nice to be there (if for only a short time) when it’s less crowded!

I live at Timber Ridge on the 5th floor. I have 4 rather small containers that I need repotted. I grew tulips in them last spring and then in summer I grew geraniums and petunias. I imagine they need new dirt by now. Do you know of anyone who would come here and do the work?
