The Nature of Wine Tasting

Of course there is the initial warmth of a little alcohol, but that aside, I enjoy the social nature of tasting. By and large the pourers working in tasting rooms are there because they love wine, and are good with people. Whether I glean facts from them, or just chat, here’s an opportunity to broaden my world a little. And I have many fond memories of being with good friends - participating in an activity together - but really just spending time in a relaxing, social pursuit.

I also appreciate the sensory aspect of tasting. Walking sun-dappled vineyards, far from a city or freeway, a light breeze dusting both my skin as well as plump grapes on the vine. Passing from the bright out-of-doors into a cool, damp cellar, when my eyes take a moment to adjust, and my nose takes in the musty odor of oak barrels and wines at various stages.

I like behind-the-scenes experiences, wherein I learn the technique and tools a craftsperson employs to create something he or she is proud of and passionate about.

And a consumable like wine is ephemeral – a great deal of work goes into producing something that doesn’t linger long on the tongue. Wine strikes people differently – even one person’s response to the same wine may change at various times, or once it’s paired with food.

For me, wine is an invitation unlike any other food or beverage, an invitation to slow down, savor and enjoy. What do you enjoy about wine tasting? What questions do you have?
