Tasting Tips

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the former. If that’s you – have a great time!

If you are in the latter group, read on.

Have you ever stared a wine label in the store, uncertain whether it registers with you because liked it, or because you disliked it? I know I have.

So my number one tip is to take notes. You don’t have to journal extensively on each wine you sip, but it’s a good idea to note the ones you especially like or dislike. You thought the ’06 Cabernet was so-so, but the ’07 was terrific. Are you going to remember that after a few more pours? Often the winery or tasting room will provide an info sheet for the wines they’re pouring. Make notations on it, and keep it. Collect the sheets in a binder.

Within a single winery’s offering, there are several variables that play into which wines you like. But as you taste more, you’ll see patterns emerge. Perhaps you’ll realize that all reds are not created alike: maybe you’ll tend to prefer cabs over merlots, for example.

Note that while this knowledge will be helpful when you select wines in the store, be sure to continue tasting a variety. Keep an open mind, and impressionable taste buds!

  3. Just wanted to post an opportunity for Bay Area gardeners and enthusiasts to taste California natives at our “Eating California” banquet this August 2nd at 5:30 pm. Chef Jon Farris has co-taught a cooking class with Alrie Middlebrook this spring and summer which culminates in this event. Tickets are $150 and can be purchased on www.cngf.org. The banquet will take place at Los Altos art center and serve as a fundraiser for California Native Garden Foundation and their work putting native gardens in local schools.

Please email with any questions to info@cngf.org.
